A cooling or hypoallergenic label does not guarantee that a fabric will suit sensitive skin. What touches you, how it is washed and the rest of the bedding all matter.

Identify the contact layer

Check the fibre content of the cover and whether your ordinary sheet will sit above it. Do not assume a product called bamboo has the same construction as another bamboo-labelled textile. Read the actual composition and finishing information where supplied.

A waterproof backing and a foam core serve different functions from the surface fabric. A washable cover does not make every underlying part washable. Follow the label and avoid adding fragrance or a cleaning product that you already know causes irritation.

Keep claims modest

This guide does not recommend a pad as treatment for eczema, allergies or another skin condition. If irritation appears or persists, stop using the suspected item and seek appropriate advice.
