A zip can open a removable topper cover, close an encasement or provide access that is not intended for routine washing. It does not by itself tell you how to clean the item.

Read the separate part labels

Find instructions for the cover and core. A foam topper may allow laundering of its textile cover while permitting only spot cleaning of the foam. An encasement is a different product with its own fabric, barrier and care instructions.

Check wash temperature, detergent restrictions and drying method before removing anything. Do not copy a hot-wash instruction from a protector to a cooling cover simply because both have zips.

Refit without forcing it

Allow the parts to dry as instructed and check their orientation before closing the zip. Do not force a cover that has shrunk or is on the wrong-sized core. If the manufacturer says not to remove a particular cover, leave it in place and use the approved cleaning method. Easy removal is useful only when it is actually part of the intended care routine.
